A gravel driveway looks simple until the first big storm of the wet season turns it into a creek. The ones that last are built around one idea: get the water off the surface and away from the driveway as fast as possible. Here’s how that’s done on South Burnett blocks, and what it costs.
The short version: strip the soft topsoil, build a compacted base, shape a crown so water runs off both sides, cut table drains to carry it away, and put in culverts wherever water needs to cross. Gravel driveways up to about 50 m start from $2,500 + GST plus gravel, and most land between $2,500 and $6,000.
Why rural driveways fail
Almost every failed driveway we fix has the same problem: water. It sits on a flat surface and softens the base, runs down the middle and cuts a gutter, or crosses the driveway at a low point and washes the gravel away. Traffic then finishes the job. Potholes, ruts and corrugations almost always trace back to poor drainage.
How a driveway that lasts is built
1. Strip the topsoil
Topsoil is full of organic matter and turns to mush when it’s wet. It comes off first, down to firm natural ground. Gravel spread straight over grass and topsoil might look fine for a month, then it sinks.
2. Build and compact the base
The base does the heavy lifting. It’s shaped from firm material and compacted in layers so it can carry everything from the family car to a delivery truck, or a truck and dog if you’re building. Soft spots get dug out and replaced before the gravel goes on.
3. Shape a crown
The surface is shaped slightly higher in the middle than at the edges, so rain runs off both sides. A flat driveway holds water, and a driveway lower in the middle becomes a drain.
4. Cut table drains
Table drains run along the sides of the driveway and carry the water away. They need enough fall to keep water moving, and they need somewhere sensible to discharge where they won’t wash out the neighbour’s fence or your house pad.
5. Put in culverts and whoa boys
Where water naturally crosses the driveway line, a culvert pipe lets it pass underneath. On sloping driveways, whoa boys (low mounds built across the surface at an angle) turn water off the driveway before it builds up speed and cuts a gutter.
6. Spread and compact the gravel
The top layer goes on last, compacted to lock it in. The right material depends on your traffic. Road base binds together well for general use, and a coarser gravel suits steeper or heavier-use driveways.
Tip: build the driveway before your house slab goes in if you can. Concrete trucks, delivery trucks and trades will all use it, and a solid driveway keeps your build from turning into a mud bath in the wet.
Do you need a permit?
If your driveway connects to a council road, the access where it meets the road (the crossover) is on council land. South Burnett Regional Council requires an approval for works on public areas and roads for driveway and crossover work. You apply using council’s permit to work on council roads and footpaths application, and the base application fee for 2026-27 is listed at $172, with additional fees possible depending on the job. Call council on 07 4189 9100 to confirm what your access needs before work starts.
If you’re on a state-controlled road, the access is managed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, so check with them instead.
What a gravel driveway costs
| Job | Starting price (ex GST) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New gravel driveway, up to about 50 m | From $2,500 plus gravel | Most land between $2,500 and $6,000 |
| Regrade and top-up | From $660 | 4-hour minimum with machine and operator, travel included |
| Culverts | Quoted per job | Depends on pipe size and how many are needed |
The things that move the price are length and width, the type and depth of gravel, how many culverts or drains are needed, and what the ground is like underneath. You’ll get a written quote with the gravel shown clearly as its own line.
Looking after it
- Clear leaves and silt out of table drains and culvert ends before the wet season
- Fix a pothole while it’s small, before water gets into the base
- Get a regrade every few years, or sooner if heavy trucks use it often
- Keep heavy vehicles off it straight after big rain where you can
Common questions
How long does a new driveway take?
A standard rural driveway up to about 50 m is usually one to two days of machine time, plus gravel delivery. Longer tracks and access roads take longer.
Can you fix our existing driveway?
Usually, yes. A lot of driveways just need the drains recut, the crown reshaped and a fresh layer of gravel. We’ll tell you honestly if it’s worth fixing or better rebuilt.
